The problem with holidays today is that they seem to be commercialized and stress-filled and involve lots of running around and very little actually celebrating.
There are some that aren’t as bad (Thanksgiving, for example) and some that have developed for perplexing reasons. Like, why do so many people decorate and shop for Halloween?
Our family invented a holiday that we look forward to as much as any other, and it adds something special to our year. We created it by accident, which seems like as good a reason to create a new holiday as any other.
Benefits of Made Up Holidays
In this too-busy world, your family can feel pressure even on happy holidays like Christmas or Thanksgiving. Your own made up holiday can feel like a break from the expectations of society. After all, you can do anything you want for your own holiday, and tailor it to the unique characteristics of your family.
The key in making a new family holiday successful is in not forcing everyone to suddenly follow a new set of rules for another new holiday. They already do that with other holidays, and if you have to make your family “have fun” it just doesn’t work.
Instead, allow your holiday to come up from something unique that goes on with your family. It may grow organically, like ours did. When you figure it your special day, go all out. Take off work like you would any other holiday and cook, give gifts, or just do nothing and enjoy each other’s company. Make your holiday about the things your family loves to do so they can look forward to the day each year.
